Baaj Likes To Walk

Published May 4, 2014 by inanortherntown

The snow and ice are almost mostly

gone or not, wait five minutes – it will change, from the sidewalks and lawns and we are trying to get back to our regular routine of the walking every night.

Baaj walking

This picture was taken at 8PM. Two hours later, the ground is completely covered with snow. Whee! Every minute of every day is a new adventure!!

After dinner and cleaning up the kitchen, as soon as someone says the word “Walk”, Baaj’s ears perk up and he starts to pace.

It has always taken us forever to get out the door, we need jackets, does anyone need to go the bathroom? should I wear a hat? has anyone seen my other glove? and then finally our shoes need to go on and we all crowd around the back door. The entire time this is going on, Baaj sits at high alert, watching our every move and hoping that we are indeed going for a walk and that he is invited.

As soon as the back door opens and he hears the magic words “Let’s go”. He proceeds to sniff and spray every available tree, bus shelter, fence, blade of grass, twig……. He is a study in bliss. We try to do a loop of approximately 5kms and I’m sure he does twice that amount darting from smell to smell.

Last night, at dusk, as we stopped to let Baaj sniff ALL THE THINGS, we happened to look up and there, dancing across the sky, were the Northern Lights. It was so beautiful just to be still for a few moments and watch.

Baaj Is Bored – An Update

Published February 26, 2013 by inanortherntown

I recently made a petition for another dog.

This dog isn’t for me but for Baaj.  I only have Baaj’s best interest at heart. He’s b.o.r.e.d. and lonely and I worry about him.

Not only was my petition was flatly denied but I was also informed that we are never ever ever getting another dog.  There was no mention in the ruling about other playmates so I’m surmising that we can get Baaj a friend as long as it is not another dog.  I’ve spent days scouring the internet for Baaj’s perfect partner.

Here’s the document I’ll be presenting at the next regularly scheduled “Animal Welfare In The Igloo: Progress & Strategies” meeting.  You’ll notice that cats aren’t listed simply due to the fact that cats are the only domestic animal not mentioned in the Bible* and we all know what that means**.

In order of importance:

5. Pot Bellied Pig
Pot Bellied Pig

Pros: So cute!!

Cons: It might be considered insensitive to continue to cook and consume bacon.

4. Little Hedgehog
LittleHedgehog

Pros: They fit in your hand. Imagine all the peoples of the world each holding one – this could bring about world peace.

Cons: Baaj has a sensitive nose. Those quills look dangerous.

3. Pygmy Hippo
Pygmy Hippo

Pros: I’d get a little bathtub for the living room – waaaaay better than an aquarium.

Cons: Scat. The scattering of the scat. Copious amounts of hippo scat.

2. Flemish Rabbit
Flemish Rabbit

Pros: Look at those ears.

Cons: It’s bigger than Baaj – he might develop an inferiority complex?

1. PANDA COW

Panda Cow

Pros: It’s a PANDA + a COW.

Cons: What? Aren’t you paying attention? It’s a PANDA + a COW. There are no cons.

Who else wants one? Maybe we could get a deal – a bulk discount?

*Mostly true. True-ish. Lions are mentioned though – but I don’t think a lion would thrive in our climate.

**I have no idea what that means – but just look at the state of my life, I better not take any chances.  I’m kidding. It’s a joke. I’m joking. Mostly.

Not A Snowball’s Chance

Published February 12, 2013 by inanortherntown

Baaj has a new game – he wants to go outside on the deck and have you throw a snowball – then he digs all through the snow trying to find it. Crazy dog.

This afternoon, he ventured off the deck and climbed up a 3ft snow bank and then got “stuck”. He was walking back forth trying to find a way to get down.

Baaj is stuck

Never fear Baaj – here comes Search & Rescue:

There she goes

There she goes

And down:

Down she goes

Down she goes

There were impassioned pleas for help:

Help meeee

Help meeee

It was too bad that I was firmly behind locked doors, drinking coffee and laughing my head off. If only I had heard her cries for help 🙂

It was the best hour of my life.

My neighbour just told me to check my sump pump to make sure it’s working because “when it thaws, it thaws fast”. I don’t know what a sump pump is, where it would be located and how to know if it works. *fingers crossed*

Pecora Nera gave me the best news of the day: Apparently snowmen will help prevent flooding! Thanks BBC!!!

I have enough snow for a complete Calvin & Hobbes montage:

Baaj is bored

Baaj is bored out of his mind and he wants you to know it.

He is B

to the ORED.

Baaj is ored

He’s got some new tricks in his repertoire:

1. Open the door, I need to go downstairs

Downstairs

2. Changed my mind, I need to be upstairs

Open The Door

3. Excuse me, do you happen to have any green grass?

Baaj in the snow

This is his latest trick: sleeping by the back door just in case you’re heading out to greener pastures – he’s ready to go!

Spice It UP

Published February 4, 2013 by inanortherntown

It’s snowing AGAIN and if I was feeling poetic I would say that it looks like dream world inside a magical snowglobe and if I was feeling optimistic I would say that snow is an equalizer and your lawn looks just as great as your neighbours; I am feeling neither. It’s sparkling fields of endless white. Beautiful but it’s wreaking havoc with our dinner time. All that white everywhere, I feel the need to cook the spiciest the most colourful food that can be politely squeezed onto a plate. However, my daughter was born with tastebuds in her fingertips and they have gone into overdrive – she just needs to wave her genetically modified fingertips in the general vicinity of her plate to know that she will ABSOLUTELY hate what has been set before her.

Tonight though was a red letter day – the meal was an absolute success. Everyone loved it – it was a new recipe that I found an hour before dinner. Salsafied Chicken and Rice – for a burrito fiesta meal. Instead of using instant rice, I used brown; I used homemade stock; I added a pinch of this spice and that spice; I removed the cheese……you get the picture: I cooked with reckless abandon and now I must pay the price. I made a meal that received 100% approval and I’ll never be able to replicate again.

My life is so tough and Baaj has zero sympathy.

Thanks Balzac Billy!

Balzac Billy – to quote from the Calgary Herald: Somebody in a gopher suit emerged from a pile of garden mulch Saturday morning with his thumbs up and sunglasses off.

It seems a bit off to me – but hey, if there is a chance that spring is coming early – I’ll take it.

It was another gorgeous sunny day here and we finally unearthed the toboggan & off we went to the closest hill.

Baaj has redefined the meaning of going for a walk:

I tried to get a picture of mid-action or at the bottom of the hill but it didn’t quite work out 🙂

Currently cooking: Mango Chutney in the slow cooker. It smells amazing in here – almost like summer!

If You Give A Dog Some Booties

Published January 22, 2013 by inanortherntown

There was colourful envelope in my mailbox today!

envelope

From my friend Pam! How fantastic – booties for Baaj and hand/feet warmers for me!
present

This is my new strategy – have Baaj wear his new shoes inside the house. Very similar to what I do: Can I walk in these heels? Do they give me blisters? Thanks Pam! I foresee some long walks at the beach in the snow soon! I’ll take pics!
Shoes for Baaj

I swear this won’t become a weather blog BUT there was a notice today that the school ski trip has been cancelled as the temperatures are expected to drop to MINUS FORTY-TWO. School is still in session though. REALLY? At what point will they throw in the towel and tell us to stay home and drink hot chocolate? There must be a magical temperature right? “Oh, look at that – hell has frozen over – school is cancelled for the day!”
